Opening of Estonian Forensic Science Institute

Today, January 26th, is the grand opening of the new laboratory and office building of Estonian Forensic Science Institute, designed by Amhold.

Amhold performed the following design disciplines: lead designer, architecture, interior design, furnishing, landscaping, structural engineering, HVAC, electrical engineering, security systems, control engineering, sprinkler system, gas extinguishing system, greenery, traffic and parking schemes, engineering technical and environmental surveys as well as author’s supervision during construction works.

Estonian Forensic Science Institute is the most contemporary and high-tech forensic science complex in the Baltic Sea region and, moreover, in the world. The building design was set up taking into account inter alia the quality requirements of ENFSI (European Network of Forensic Science Institutes) and FBI’s Cyber Division. The building design includes all required rooms and labs for execution of at least 40 different tasks.

Estonian Forensic Science Institute was established in 2008 upon a merger of two organisations –Bureau of Forensic Medicine of Estonia and Forensic Service Centre. The designed office and lab building includes different spaces in regards to functional purposes: labs, office space, conference rooms and multifunctional presentation rooms, archive storages, MRI and CT laboratories, forensic investigation and medical research laboratories (DNA and IT crime laboratories), analytical laboratories of explosions and explosive devices, autopsy rooms, laboratories for the investigation of drugs, laboratories for the investigation of coins and banknotes, laboratories for the 3D reconstruction of criminal offences, storage of explosives, the house of scenes, shooting range for the expert analysis of weapons, power transformation station (from low voltage to high voltage), micro-kitchens, open parking area and garage with ancillary premises.

The design of the building with 7 storeys above ground and 2 underground, and with the total gross area of 11,269.5 sq.m. lasted 2007–2008, the construction works were undertaken 2009–2010. The building is located in Tallinn, at the address Rahumäe st. 6. The Contracting Authority was State Real Estate Ltd and the construction works were performed by NCC Ehituse Ltd.
