Opening of Renovated Academic and Science Building “Philosophicum” of Faculty of Philosophy of University of Tartu

26.09.2014

On Friday, September 23rd was the grand opening of newly renovated academic and science building “Philosophicum” of Faculty of Philosophy of University of Tartu, located at Jakobi St. 2. The university was founded in 1632 by Gustav II Adolf, the King of Sweden.

Among the others, the event was attended by Tartu Mayor Urmas Kruuse, Rector of University of Tartu Alar Karis, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy Valter Lang, Professor emeritus, chemist and historian Tullio Iloments and a Board Member of Oma Ehitaja Ltd Kaido Fridolin.

The end of the construction works of the Jakobi St. 2 building with gross area 8,628 m2 represents the completion of the campus of Faculty of Philosophy which has been waited for years.

Built in 1939 and formerly known as the chemistry building offered many surprises and racked the renovators’ brains. The expected volume of archaeological works increased tremendously, due to large amount (about 1000) of archaeological findings, mainly skeletons. The skeletons are preserved for further scientific research and examinations in the archaeology chamber in the basement at Jakobi St. 2.

Amhold performed reconstruction-renovation design and all related surveys as the lead designer. During the design-surveying works Amhold provided the following services: architectural-historical surveys, engineering-technical and environmental surveys, architecture, interior design, structural and construction designs of all other engineering disciplines (heating, ventilation, cooling, water supply, sewage, drainage, electrical, safety and security systems, control engineering). Also, we performed the design of external utilities networks and greenery, the plot’s roads and courts, and author’s supervision during the construction works.

The staff of Amhold included the project manager Jaan Aru, architect and interior designer Jane Pärnamaa, mechanical engineers Jelena Štšetinina and Märt Falk.

Construction works and furnishing cost about 4.3M EUR. The Client of the design and construction works was University of Tartu and the main contractor of the construction works was Oma Ehitus Ltd.
